Asylregler refer to the rules and procedures that govern how a country recognizes and protects people who seek asylum. They define who may be eligible for international protection, how applications are filed, how decisions are made, and what rights and duties apply during the process. Because asylum systems are shaped by national law and international obligations, practices vary across jurisdictions.

Central elements include the application process (where and when to apply, documentation required), the eligibility test (often based on a well-founded fear of persecution due to race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group, or political opinion), and the assessment of safety in the applicant's home country. Some systems also consider subsidiary protection or humanitarian status.

During proceedings, asylum seekers typically have access to information, legal aid or representation, interpreter services, and basic social services such as healthcare and housing. Depending on the country, they may be granted temporary residence or work rights, or placed in reception centers. In some cases, authorities may detain individuals for security or integration concerns.

Decisions can include recognition as a refugee, grant of subsidiary protection, or rejection. Most systems provide a right to appeal or request an internal review, and many include independent oversight or judicial review. Time limits for filing appeals and the standards of proof may differ between jurisdictions.

Internationally, asylum rules are informed by the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol, as well as regional instruments and directives in places like the European Union. National rules balance protection with border management, and reforms are common as contexts change.
