Astronoomia is the natural science that studies celestial objects, events, and the structure of the universe. Historically, astronoomia began with careful naked-eye observations in ancient civilizations and evolved with the invention of the telescope in the 17th century. Figures such as Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton laid foundations for celestial mechanics and heliocentric models. In the 20th century, astrophysics emerged, connecting observational data with physics. Advances in spectroscopy, radio, infrared, and space-based astronomy expanded reach beyond the optical band. Modern cosmology and high-energy astrophysics address the universe's origin, composition, and fate.

Study combines observational techniques—photometry, spectroscopy, astrometry, and imaging across radio, infrared, optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths—with theoretical modeling, computer simulations, and laboratory experiments that test physical processes under extreme conditions.

Major facilities include ground-based telescopes (such as large optical/IR and radio arrays) and space telescopes (for example, Hubble, James Webb, Chandra). Data from large surveys and missions (Gaia, SDSS, Planck) support statistical studies and cosmology. Interferometry and adaptive optics enhance resolution; spectroscopy reveals composition, temperatures, and motions.

Astronoomia is pursued in universities and research institutes worldwide, often within larger departments of physics or natural sciences. It informs related fields such as planetary science, cosmology, and astrobiology and contributes to technology development in imaging, detectors, and data processing. The field continues to address fundamental questions about the origin of the universe, the life cycle of celestial objects, and the potential for life beyond Earth.
