Astelia
Astelia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteliaceae, native to New Zealand. The genus includes two species, Astelia banksii and Astelia nervosa. Both species are perennial herbs, growing to a height of about 30-60 cm. They are characterized by their distinctive, strap-shaped leaves and small, white or pink flowers that bloom in summer. Astelia plants are often used in gardens for their attractive foliage and as a source of nectar for bees and other pollinators. They prefer well-drained soil and partial shade, and are hardy in USDA zones 8-11. Astelia plants are also known for their medicinal properties, with traditional use in New Zealand for treating respiratory conditions. However, further research is needed to confirm these benefits. In cultivation, Astelia plants are relatively easy to grow and can be propagated from seed or division. They are also known to be invasive in some areas, so care should be taken when planting them in the wild.
