Astatates are chemical species associated with astatine, the heaviest naturally occurring halogen. In the broad sense, the term refers to oxoanions and related compounds that contain the astatine atom in an oxyanion framework, most notably the astatate anion AtO4−, and its closely related forms. These species are analogous in concept to the periodates and perchlorates formed by lighter halogens, but their chemistry is far less well characterized due to the extreme rarity and radioactivity of astatine.

The chemistry of astatates is studied mainly in the context of laboratory experiments using short-lived isotopes such as astatine-211. In aqueous solution, astatine can form oxoanions under strong oxidizing conditions, and AtO4− is the most commonly discussed hypothetical or observed form in solution, depending on oxidation state and pH. As a result, detailed thermodynamic data, structures, and stability constants for astatates are limited and often rely on radiochemical methods and theoretical modeling.

In practice, research on astatates intersects with broader efforts in astatine chemistry and radiopharmaceutical development. Astatine-211 is used in targeted alpha therapies, and understanding the behavior of astatine in various oxidation states and coordination environments informs attempts to couple astatine to biological targeting vectors. The study of astatates remains a niche area, constrained by the element’s scarcity, radioactivity, and the challenges of conducting measurements with short-lived isotopes.
