Aspirointisensorit

Aspirointisensorit is a proposed class of sensors intended to detect aspiration events, defined as the entry of material from the oropharynx or stomach into the airway. The term combines the Finnish words for aspiration (aspirointi) and sensors (sensorit), and is used in discussions of medical technology aimed at preventing aspiration-related complications such as pneumonia, particularly in high‑risk patients.

Design and operation of aspirointisensorit are typically described as multi‑modal in nature. Potential modalities include acoustic sensing of swallow and airway sounds, impedance-based monitoring of respiratory and pharyngeal impedance changes, capnography and airflow sensors to detect abnormal airway flow, and electromyographic signals from laryngeal or swallowing muscles. Some concepts consider optical or chemical sensing of residues or exhaled biomarkers. The goal is real‑time detection of an aspiration event or an imminent risk, with integrated alerts to clinicians or automated safety responses in associated devices such as ventilators or feeding tubes.

Applications are envisioned across perioperative care, neurorehabilitation for dysphagia, intensive care units, and long-term care settings where patients are prone to aspiration. In practice, aspirointisensorit would complement existing monitoring, feeding protocols, and swallowing assessments, enabling timely interventions to reduce the incidence of aspiration pneumonia and related morbidity.

Current status remains exploratory, with ongoing research into reliable detection methods, data fusion, patient safety, and regulatory pathways. Further clinical studies are needed to establish sensitivity, specificity, and practical integration into care workflows.
