Aspiratsioonile

Aspiratsioonile refers to the act of inhaling foreign material into the airways and lungs. This can include food, liquids, vomit, or other substances. Aspiration can occur when there is a problem with the normal swallowing reflex, such as during illness, after surgery, or in individuals with certain neurological conditions. It can also happen when someone is unconscious or has a reduced level of consciousness.

The consequences of aspiration can range from mild irritation to severe pneumonia, known as aspiration pneumonia. Symptoms may include coughing, choking, difficulty breathing, and fever. The severity depends on the amount and type of material aspirated, as well as the individual's overall health. In some cases, aspiration can lead to serious respiratory distress or even death.

Diagnosis often involves a combination of clinical assessment, imaging studies like chest X-rays, and sometimes specialized swallowing evaluations. Treatment focuses on removing the foreign material if possible, managing any infection that develops, and addressing the underlying cause of the aspiration. Prevention strategies are crucial and may include modifying food textures, using feeding tubes, and positioning the individual appropriately during and after meals.
