Asperitas is a cloud type that was officially recognized in the International Cloud Atlas as a distinct category in 2017. The name derives from the Latin asperitas, meaning roughness or harshness, reflecting the characteristic appearance of these clouds.

Appearance and characteristics: Asperitas clouds have a dramatic, irregular underside that appears wave-like or ribbed, with dark shadows and lighter crests creating a textured, chaotic look. The base can look like a churning surface, sometimes resembling an inverted shoreline or a sea of turbulence. The upper portions of the cloud layer are typically less definable, and asperitas can be seen as a feature of a larger stratified deck, such as stratocumulus or related low- to mid-level cloud formations.

Formation and conditions: Asperitas is associated with turbulent air and wind shear, often developing in environments influenced by gusty winds, advancing fronts, or outflow boundaries from storms.
