Ashariyyah

Ashariyyah, also known as the Ash'ari school of theology, is a major Sunni Islamic theological school of thought. It was founded by the scholar Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari in the 10th century CE. The Ash'ari school emerged as a response to perceived theological challenges and aimed to reconcile rational reasoning with Islamic scripture.

Key tenets of Ash'ari theology include a belief in God's absolute power and will, and the idea that divine revelation is the primary source of knowledge about God. While acknowledging the importance of reason, Ash'aris emphasize that it should not contradict or supersede the Quran and Sunnah. They developed sophisticated methods of interpretation to address complex theological questions, often engaging with philosophical arguments prevalent in their time.

The Ash'ari school became one of the dominant theological traditions within Sunni Islam, influencing scholars and jurists across the Muslim world. Its emphasis on tradition and reasoned explanation contributed to the intellectual landscape of Islamic scholarship for centuries. While other theological schools exist within Sunni Islam, such as Maturidism, Ash'ari thought has held a prominent and enduring position.
