The primary component of asphalt is bitumen, a black, sticky, semi-solid form of petroleum. This bitumen acts as a binder, holding together a mixture of aggregates, which are typically sand, gravel, or crushed stone.

The production of asphalt involves heating the bitumen and aggregates to specific temperatures and then mixing them thoroughly. This hot mix asphalt is then transported to the site, spread evenly over a prepared base layer, and compacted using heavy rollers. The compaction is crucial to create a dense, durable, and smooth surface. As the asphalt cools, the bitumen solidifies, binding the aggregates into a solid mat.

Asfalttipäällysteet offer several advantages, including relatively low initial cost, rapid construction and curing times, and a smooth, quiet ride for vehicles. They are also flexible, which can help them withstand some ground movement without cracking. However, asphalt can be susceptible to damage from extreme temperatures, heavy loads, and certain chemicals. Regular maintenance, such as crack sealing and resurfacing, is often required to prolong its lifespan. Different types of asphalt mixes exist, tailored to specific climatic conditions and traffic demands, ranging from dense-graded mixes for highways to open-graded mixes for better drainage.
