Asfalttipäällysteen, commonly known as asphalt pavement, is a ubiquitous material used for surfacing roads, highways, parking lots, and other paved surfaces. It is a composite material primarily composed of aggregate, which includes gravel, sand, and crushed stone, bound together by bitumen, a sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. The specific proportions of aggregate and bitumen, along with the type of aggregate used, can be varied to create asphalt mixtures with different properties tailored to specific applications and climatic conditions.

The production of asphalt pavement typically involves heating the aggregate and bitumen separately and then mixing them thoroughly in an asphalt plant. This hot mix asphalt is then transported to the construction site and laid in layers using paving machines. The freshly laid asphalt is then compacted using rollers to achieve a dense and smooth surface. The thickness of the asphalt layers varies depending on the expected traffic load and the type of sub-base.

Asphalt pavement offers several advantages, including its relatively low initial cost, rapid construction time, and smooth riding surface. It is also highly durable and can withstand heavy traffic loads. Furthermore, asphalt can be recycled, making it an environmentally friendly option. However, asphalt surfaces can be susceptible to damage from extreme temperatures, heavy rain, and the use of de-icing salts, which can lead to cracking and potholes. Regular maintenance, such as crack sealing and resurfacing, is essential to prolong the lifespan of asphalt pavements.
