An aryl group is a functional substituent derived from an aromatic ring by removing a hydrogen atom, allowing the ring to be linked to another molecule via a carbon–carbon bond. The most common aryl group is the phenyl group (C6H5–). Other examples include naphthyl, anthryl, and substituted phenyls such as tolyl or chlorophenyl.

Nomenclature and representation: In systematic chemistry, aryl denotes the substituent derived from an arene; common aryl names include phenyl, naphthyl, and tolyl. The aryl group is typically written as Ar– to indicate attachment to the rest of the molecule, with specific examples such as Ph– for phenyl.

Properties and influences: Aryl groups are planar and sp2-hybridized, and they participate in resonance with adjacent pi systems. They affect a molecule’s electronic and steric properties through conjugation and inductive effects. The presence of an aryl group can alter acidity, basicity, and reactivity, and can stabilize adjacent charges via delocalization. Their rigidity and conjugation often influence UV absorption, lipophilicity, and molecular recognition in biological contexts.

Synthesis and installation: Aryl groups are installed through various methods, most notably aryl–carbon bond-forming cross-couplings such as Suzuki–Miyaura, Negishi, and Kumada couplings. These reactions typically join an aryl halide or pseudohalide with an organometallic partner to form Ar–C bonds. Aryl groups can also be introduced via arylation of heteroatoms (Ar–O, Ar–N) or through radical pathways from diazonium salts, depending on the substrate and desired product.

Applications: Aryl groups are widespread in organic synthesis, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, dyes, and polymers. They contribute to molecular rigidity, planarity, and conjugation, influencing properties such as electronic behavior, binding interactions, and solubility.
