Possible interpretations include: (1) the carbon atoms that make up an aryl (aromatic) group, such as the sp2-hybridized carbons in a benzene ring; these carbons form a planar, delocalized π-system and are part of the backbone of an aryl substituent. (2) the bond between an aryl group and a carbon center, i.e., an aryl–carbon bond found in many organic molecules such as aryl-alkyl or aryl-aryl compounds. (3) a misnomer for related functional groups such as arylcarbonyl, where an aryl group is bonded to a carbonyl (Ar–CO–).

Aryl carbons are typically discussed in the context of substitution patterns on aromatic rings or in reactions that form or break C–Ar bonds. By contrast, arylcarbonyl represents a well-defined functional group with distinct reactivity, Ar–CO–, widely used in naming and synthesis.

Because the term arylcarbon lacks a standardized definition, it is important to rely on the immediate context or consult the author’s definition. In formal writing, it is preferable to use precise terms such as aryl carbon atoms, aryl–carbon bond, or arylcarbonyl to avoid ambiguity.
