Etymology and names: The name Arvergren is of uncertain origin; scholars link it to older regional terms meaning “edge of the hills.” The spelling variants Arvergren and Arvergrin appear in historical documents.

History: Archaeological finds indicate continuous settlement from the late Bronze Age; the first written reference appears in 1173, noting a fortified manor and weekly market. The medieval period saw gradual expansion of timber-based industries. The town retained market rights into the early modern era, with urban growth slowing in the 19th century due to migration to cities.
