Artilleriegeschosse, commonly known as artillery shells, are projectile munitions fired from artillery pieces. These weapons, such as cannons, howitzers, and mortars, are designed to deliver explosive payloads over long distances. The primary purpose of artillery shells is to inflict damage on enemy forces, fortifications, and equipment through their explosive charge or by kinetic impact.

The design of an artillery shell involves several key components. The casing, typically made of steel, houses the explosive filler and the fuze. The explosive filler can vary, ranging from high explosives like TNT or Composition B to specialized agents for smoke or illumination. The fuze is the mechanism that initiates the detonation of the explosive filler. Fuzes can be designed to detonate on impact (impact fuzes), at a specific time after firing (time fuzes), or in proximity to a target (proximity fuzes).

Artillery shells come in a wide variety of calibers, corresponding to the bore diameter of the artillery piece they are designed for. Common calibers range from smaller mortar rounds to larger naval gun shells. The trajectory of an artillery shell is determined by factors such as the initial velocity, angle of elevation, air resistance, and wind. Modern artillery shells can be guided, utilizing systems like GPS or laser designation to achieve greater accuracy.

Beyond high-explosive rounds, artillery shells can also be designed for other purposes. Smoke shells are used to create visual cover for friendly forces or to mark targets. Illumination shells provide light for night operations. Cluster munitions, though increasingly controversial and banned by many nations, contain smaller submunitions that are dispersed over a wide area. The development and use of artillery shells have played a significant role in warfare throughout history, evolving with advancements in metallurgy, explosives, and guidance technology.
