Artikulaatiossa

Artikulaatiossa is Finnish for “in articulation” and refers to the state or process of producing speech sounds through the movement and contact of the articulators in the vocal tract. In linguistic analysis, artikulaatio describes how sounds are physically formed, as opposed to their abstract phonological representation.

In Finnish, the term is drawn from artikulaatio, meaning articulation, with the suffix -ssa indicating location or state “in articulation.” The concept is central to phonetics and is used to explain how different sounds are created by moving the lips, tongue, palate, velum, and glottis. Articulations are analyzed in terms of places of articulation (for example labial, dental, alveolar, palatal, velar, glottal) and manners of articulation (such as stops, fricatives, nasals, liquids, and glides). Additional features such as voicing, aspiration, and lip rounding are also considered when describing articulation.

The term Artikulaatiossa may appear in linguistic descriptions, textbooks, and research that focus on the physical production of speech sounds. Analyses often compare articulatory patterns across languages, investigate how articulation changes in connected speech, or examine how articulation influences acoustic properties and perceptual distinction between sounds.

In practice, artikulaatio studies support fields ranging from theoretical phonology to speech synthesis, speech pathology, and language teaching. They provide a framework for documenting and understanding how speech is carried out in real time, as well as how variations in articulation affect intelligibility and sound systems.
