Arrangementslike

Arrangementslike is a term used in combinatorics and related disciplines to refer to classes of objects that resemble standard arrangements (such as permutations or linear orders) but are defined up to an equivalence relation induced by symmetries or constraints. The term is not tied to a single formal definition, but generally denotes families of orderings or placements of elements that are considered the same when related by a specified set of transformations.

Formal framework: Let S be a finite set of n elements. Let C be a set of constraints on orderings (for example, adjacency or position restrictions). Let G be a group of symmetries acting on the set of sequences from S. An arrangementlike object is an equivalence class of sequences under the action of G that also satisfies all constraints in C. Counting such objects often uses Burnside’s lemma or Pólya enumeration to account for symmetries.

Examples: Seating problems around a table with certain adjacencies forbidden, where two seatings related by a rotation are considered the same only if the constraint preserves the rotational symmetry; colorings of a line with limited color usage under reversal symmetry; schedules where only relative orderings matter.

Applications: Arrangementlike concepts appear in enumerative combinatorics, chemistry for counting isomers under symmetry, and scheduling or ranking problems where only relative positions matter.
