Armierungsmörtel

Armierungsmörtel, often translated as reinforcing mortar or mesh mortar, is a specially formulated cementitious or synthetic-resin-based mortar used in conjunction with reinforcing mesh. Its primary purpose is to provide structural reinforcement and crack resistance to building components, particularly in external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) or "Wärmedämmverbundsysteme" (WDVS) in German-speaking countries.

The mortar acts as an adhesive for the insulation boards and simultaneously serves as a key component for embedding the reinforcing mesh. This mesh, typically made of alkali-resistant fiberglass, is pressed into the wet mortar layer, creating a strong and durable composite. The mortar then cures, encasing the mesh and providing a robust, crack-bridging layer that protects the insulation from mechanical damage and environmental influences.

Armierungsmörtel is characterized by its good workability, high adhesion to various substrates and insulation materials, and its ability to resist cracking. It is essential for the long-term performance and durability of ETICS, preventing the formation and propagation of cracks on the facade due to thermal expansion and contraction, or minor impacts. Different types of Armierungsmörtel are available, varying in their composition and properties, to suit specific application requirements and climate conditions.
