Arkivformaten

Arkivformaten, or archive formats, are file formats used to package, store, and preserve digital objects in archives, libraries, and data repositories. They serve two broad purposes: packaging multiple files together and providing mechanisms for metadata, checksums, provenance, and sometimes compression. Archive formats can be container formats, which bundle files and metadata into a single file, or specialized formats intended for long-term preservation.

Common container formats include ZIP, TAR (often with gzip, bz2, or xz compression), and 7z. Other formats serve archiving or preservation workflows, such as BagIt, which packages payloads with manifests, or WARC for web archives. In digital preservation, openness and standardization are valued; formats are chosen for longevity, forward compatibility, and the ability to verify integrity, often via checksums and fixity metadata.

Important considerations include licensing and patent status, platform independence, support for metadata schemas (such as Dublin Core, PREMIS), and compatibility with preservation workflows and software ecosystems. Long-term preservation also emphasizes self-describing formats, migration strategies, and emulation or encapsulation of dependencies.

Usage: Archives, libraries, museums, universities, and government agencies use Arkivformaten to store datasets, documents, digital records, and web collections. They enable efficient transfer, storage, and retrieval while supporting preservation actions like integrity checks, rehydration, and format migrations.

Notable standards and initiatives include the OAIS reference model, BagIt packaging format, and WARC for web archives.
