Arkitasesti

Arkitasesti is an abandoned ancient settlement located in the eastern Mediterranean region. The site is situated in the Anti-Taurus Mountains of southern Cilicia, Turkey. Archaeological excavations have revealed the presence of both Greek and Roman-era structures, indicating a history of habitation spanning several centuries.

Initial human presence at Arkitasesti dates back to the Hellenistic period, with evidence of a fortified settlement and a network of water supply channels. The settlement expanded during the Roman Empire, with the construction of improved infrastructure, including aqueducts and a central marketplace. Archaeological evidence also suggests the presence of a Roman temple, which may have been dedicated to the local cult of Zeus Lykas.

Excavation records indicate that Arkitasesti flourished during the first three centuries CE, with a peak population estimated at several thousand residents. However, further excavations have revealed signs of decline and eventual abandonment in the fourth or fifth century CE. The reasons behind this decline are unclear.

Today, the site of Arkitasesti lies unexcavated and largely overgrown. Despite its promising archaeological potential, the site has received relatively little attention from researchers and excavators. Future excavations are likely to shed more light on the history and significance of this enigmatic ancient settlement.
