Aritmeetikaga refers to the traditional Estonian method of arithmetic instruction, rooted in the country’s educational history and cultural practices. Developed in the early 20th century, it emphasizes a structured, oral-based approach to teaching basic arithmetic operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—through repetitive drills and memorization. The method gained prominence in Estonian schools during the interwar period and remained influential until the mid-20th century, when it was gradually replaced by more modern pedagogical techniques.

The core principle of aritmeetikaga is the systematic progression from simple to complex problems, often using verbal cues and rhythmic chants to reinforce number relationships. Teachers would guide students through problems aloud, encouraging group participation to solidify understanding. This approach was particularly effective in rural areas, where resources were limited, and relied heavily on collective learning and teacher-led instruction.

Critics of aritmeetikaga argue that its reliance on memorization and rote learning can hinder deeper mathematical comprehension, while proponents highlight its efficiency in building foundational arithmetic skills.
