It is described as a fortified trading center at the conjunction of the Neth River and the Silver Way, with stone streets, arcaded markets, and the hilltop keep of the ruling council.

The name is cited in various texts as deriving from the Old Tongue, with interpretations ranging from "noble valley" to "bright gateway," reflecting contested lore among authors and game designers. Geographically, the city sits at a river delta with fertile terraces; the climate is temperate, with fog-bound mornings and mild summers. Surrounding regions provide timber, grain, and wool.
