Archivbildung refers to the process of creating and establishing archives. It encompasses the systematic acquisition, appraisal, arrangement, description, and preservation of records that are deemed to have enduring value. Description is the next crucial step, involving the creation of finding aids or inventories that provide detailed information about the contents of the archive, enabling researchers to locate relevant materials.

Finally, preservation ensures the long-term survival of the records. This can involve various techniques, such as proper storage in controlled environments, physical or digital conservation of deteriorating materials, and the development of digital preservation strategies for born-digital records.
