Archil
Archil, commonly Archilochus of Paros, refers to an early Greek lyric poet from the island of Paros in the Cyclades, active in the late 7th century BCE. The name Archil is sometimes used as a shortened form of Archilochus in modern contexts. He is one of the first poets in the Greek world whose name is known and whose work survives primarily in fragments quoted by later authors. From the surviving fragments, Archilochus appears as a versatile writer who experimented with personal subject matter and various lyric metres, especially iambic trimeter and elegiac couplets, as well as some choral lyric.
