Arborister

An arborister is a professional who specializes in arboriculture, the science and practice of growing, conserving, and managing trees and other woody plants. The term is used in several languages and is closely related to the English term arborist. Arboristers work in urban, suburban, and rural settings to maintain tree health, safety, and ecological value.

Typical duties include assessing tree health and structure, diagnosing diseases and pest problems, performing pruning and thinning to guide growth and reduce risk, removing hazardous trees or limbs when necessary, and planting or transplanting trees. They may install supports such as cabling or bracing, apply soil amendments or fertilizer, and advise on tree protection during construction or development. They also monitor storms and perform risk assessments to protect people and property.

Training and certification vary by country. Many arboristers have formal education in horticulture, forestry, or landscape architecture and gain experience through apprenticeships. Professional certifications, such as the ISA Certified Arborist in the United States, or regional equivalents, are common and typically require demonstrating knowledge, hands-on experience, and ongoing education. Licensing may be required for certain activities or jurisdictions.

Arborister work relies on specialized equipment, including climbing gear, ropes, helmets, chainsaws, pruning tools, and, for elevated work, aerial lifts or platforms. Safety and adherence to local regulations and tree-care standards are essential due to the inherent risks of working with tall trees, heavy equipment, and variable weather.
