Arbetsklass

Arbetsklass, often translated as working class, refers to a socioeconomic group characterized by its members' reliance on manual labor or wage-earning jobs. Historically, this term emerged during the Industrial Revolution, distinguishing those who operated machinery and performed manual tasks in factories from the bourgeoisie, or capitalist class, who owned the means of production. The concept of the working class is central to many sociological and political theories, particularly Marxism, which analyzes class struggle as a primary driver of historical change.

In contemporary society, the definition of arbetsklass can be more nuanced. While traditional manual labor remains a core component, it can also encompass individuals in service industries, retail, and other occupations that are typically low-wage and offer limited job security or opportunities for advancement. Factors such as education level, income, and occupational prestige are often used to delineate working-class status. Social mobility, or the ability to move between social classes, is a significant aspect of discussions surrounding the working class, with its perceived limitations often a subject of social policy debate. The culture and political affiliations of the working class have also been extensively studied, often showing distinct patterns in voting behavior and lifestyle choices.
