Arbejdsmarkedsteori, also known as labor market theory, is a broad field of economics that seeks to explain how labor markets function. It analyzes the supply of labor, the demand for labor, and how these interact to determine wages, employment levels, and other labor market outcomes. Core to many theories is the concept of a competitive labor market where employers and workers freely interact. In such a model, wages are seen as the price that balances the quantity of labor supplied by individuals with the quantity demanded by firms.

Different theories offer varying perspectives on this interaction. Neoclassical labor economics often emphasizes human capital theory, suggesting that individuals invest in education and training to increase their productivity, which in turn leads to higher wages. Conversely, institutional economics highlights the role of social norms, unions, and government regulations in shaping labor market outcomes, arguing that markets are not always perfectly competitive. Theories also address issues such as unemployment, explaining it through factors like frictional unemployment (temporary joblessness during transitions), structural unemployment (mismatch between skills and available jobs), and cyclical unemployment (job losses due to economic downturns).
