Aquathlons

An aquathlon is a multisport race consisting of swimming and running. It is one of the simpler forms of multisport, often seen as a good entry point for beginners. Typically, an aquathlon involves a swim segment followed immediately by a run segment. There is no cycling component, distinguishing it from triathlons or duathlons.

The distances for aquathlons can vary significantly. Common formats include sprint aquathlons, which might involve a 750-meter swim and a 5-kilometer run, and longer distances like an Olympic aquathlon, which could be a 1,500-meter swim followed by a 10-kilometer run. Shorter, more accessible versions are also popular, especially for younger athletes or those new to the sport.

Aquathlons are organized by various sporting bodies, including national federations and international organizations like World Triathlon (formerly the International Triathlon Union). These events can be found at local club level, national championships, and even as part of international competitions. The simplicity of the disciplines makes them accessible for a wide range of participants, from recreational athletes to elite competitors. Transitioning between the swim and the run is a key element of the race, though without a bike, the transition area is usually less complex than in a triathlon.
