Aqlars are a sapient species native to Nyxara, an ocean world in the Zephran sector of the galactic frontier. They have established coastal dome cities embedded in coral reef formations and maintain extensive underwater infrastructure connected to surface settlements.

They are slender, bipedal beings averaging 1.6 to 1.9 meters in height. Their skin is translucent with visible vascular networks, and they possess gill-like slits for underwater respiration. They have large, multi-faceted eyes suited to low light and a pair of sensory fins along the forearms that aid propulsion in water. Their bodies host bioluminescent organs that emit varying colors and patterns, used in social signaling and high-speed signaling during cooperative tasks.

Aqlars live in a federation of guild-like communities that coordinate through formal councils and shared ecological goals. They place high value on environmental stewardship, craftsmanship, and scientific inquiry. Communication blends spoken language with gestures and rhythmic bioluminescent pulses, and their written language consists of light-etched glyphs on transparent panels or on the skin.

They developed advanced propulsion and underwater mining technologies, enabling limited spaceflight and orbital habitats. First contact with humans occurred in 2168, leading to diplomatic relations and scientific exchange.
