Aprioritodennäköisyys

Aprioritodennäköisyys, often translated as a priori probability, is a concept in probability theory referring to the probability of an event that is determined before any empirical data or experimentation is collected. It is based on logical reasoning, symmetry, or prior knowledge about the system or random experiment. In essence, it is a probability assigned to an outcome based on theoretical considerations rather than observed frequencies.

A classic example of aprioritodennäköisyys is the probability of rolling a specific number on a fair six-sided die. Assuming the die is unbiased, there are six equally likely outcomes. Therefore, the probability of rolling any particular number, such as a 3, is 1/6. This probability is determined by the structure of the die and the assumption of fairness, not by actually rolling the die many times and counting the occurrences of each number.

Aprioritodennäköisyys is contrasted with aposteriori probability (or empirical probability), which is derived from observed data. While aprioritodennäköisyys relies on deductive reasoning, aposteriori probability uses inductive reasoning. In many practical applications, aprioritodennäköisyys serves as a starting point or a baseline, which can then be updated or refined as more data becomes available.
