Approbiert

Approbiert is a German adjective and past participle used chiefly in professional and legal contexts to indicate that a person has received an official state license (Approbation) to practise a regulated health profession. It is most commonly applied to physicians, dentists, pharmacists and psychotherapists: an "approbierter Arzt" is a doctor with full authorization to practise independently in Germany.

The Approbation is granted by the competent state authority (Landesbehörde) after prescribed training and examinations are completed. For physicians this typically includes a completed university medical degree, successful passage of the Staatsexamen (state examination) and required practical training. Holders of the Approbation have the right to use protected professional titles, to work without supervision in their field and are subject to professional regulation, oversight by regional professional chambers and disciplinary measures. The licence can be revoked or restricted for professional misconduct, health reasons or legal incapacity.

For applicants with foreign qualifications there are procedures for recognition and equivalence assessment; when full equivalence cannot immediately be established, temporary or limited permits (Berufserlaubnis) may be issued instead. In general usage, "approbiert" can also mean "approved" or "authorized" in other administrative contexts, but its primary legal significance in German-speaking countries is the conferral of a state-recognized right to practise certain regulated professions.
