Apprentice

An apprentice is a person who learns a trade, craft, or profession under the guidance of a skilled practitioner, typically through a structured combination of paid, on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Apprenticeships aim to transfer practical competencies and theoretical knowledge, culminating in recognized qualifications or credentials.

The term derives from Old French apprenti, from Latin roots related to learning and preparation. In medieval Europe, apprentices were bound to masters within guilds to master a craft before working independently. The guild system controlled entry, standards, and progression.
