Apocalypticas

Apocalypticas is a nonstandard plural form sometimes used to refer to Apocalyptica, a Finnish cello metal band formed in Helsinki in 1993. The group is known for using cellos as lead instruments in a heavy metal context and for instrumental arrangements of rock and metal songs, helping to establish the cello metal subgenre.

Formation and breakthrough: The band began as a collective of classically trained cellists. They released their debut album Plays Metallica by Four Cellos in 1996, an instrumental collection of Metallica songs that brought them international attention. Over the following years they expanded their repertoire to include original material and collaborations, and the lineup evolved with new members joining and leaving.

Collaborations and evolution: In addition to instrumental work, Apocalyptica began featuring guest vocalists and collaborating with artists from rock and metal. A notable project is Worlds Collide (2003), a collaboration with Corey Taylor of Slipknot.
