Aotsugi

Aotsugi, also known as *Aoi no Ue no Aotsugi* (青の上の青葦), is a traditional Japanese musical instrument and a type of *shakuhachi* (竹笛), a bamboo flute. The term *aotsugi* literally translates to "green reed" or "green bamboo," referring to its natural material and appearance. This instrument is historically significant in Japanese folk music, particularly in the *noh* theater and *kabuki* performances, where it was used to evoke natural sounds and atmospheric effects.

The aotsugi is typically made from a single piece of bamboo, often sourced from the *Mizuki* or *Kozuki* varieties, which are known for their tonal qualities.
