Antofalla

Antofalla is a stratovolcano located in the Puna de Atacama region of Argentina, specifically in the Antofalla province of Catamarca. It is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world, with its summit reaching an elevation of 6,440 meters (21,128 feet) above sea level. The volcano is characterized by its steep slopes and a prominent caldera at its summit.

The geological history of Antofalla is complex, involving multiple eruptive phases. Evidence suggests that volcanic activity at this site has occurred over a long period, with the most recent significant eruptions likely taking place several thousand years ago. The volcano is composed primarily of andesite and dacite lavas. Despite its high altitude, Antofalla is considered active, with fumarolic activity observed on its slopes, indicating the presence of a magma chamber beneath the surface.

Antofalla is situated in a remote and arid environment, typical of the high-altitude Puna. The surrounding landscape is sparsely vegetated and characterized by volcanic ash, rock fields, and salt flats. The nearest permanent settlement is the small village of Antofalla, located to the west of the volcano. Due to its extreme elevation and remoteness, climbing Antofalla is a challenging endeavor, undertaken by experienced mountaineers and often requiring extensive logistical preparation. The views from the summit offer a panoramic vista of the vast Andean plateau.
