Antiseptikuid refers to chemical substances used to inhibit the growth of microorganisms, particularly bacteria, on living tissues. These agents are commonly applied to wounds, surgical sites, and skin to reduce the risk of infection. Unlike disinfectants, which are used on inanimate objects, antiseptics are designed to be safe for use on human or animal skin and mucous membranes.

The first antiseptics were introduced in the mid-19th century, following the work of Ignaz Semmelweis and later Joseph Lister, who demonstrated the importance of cleanliness in preventing infections. Lister’s use of carbolic acid (phenol) in surgical procedures marked a significant milestone in medical history. Over time, more effective and less irritating antiseptics were developed, including alcohol-based solutions, iodine compounds, and chlorhexidine.

Common antiseptics include:

- **Alcohol (ethanol or isopropyl alcohol)**, widely used for its rapid action and broad-spectrum efficacy.

- **Iodine (povidone-iodine)**, effective against a wide range of pathogens but may cause skin irritation.

- **Chlorhexidine**, a popular antiseptic due to its low toxicity and prolonged activity.

- **Hydrogen peroxide**, used for its oxidizing properties, though it can be irritating.

- **Quaternary ammonium compounds**, often found in antiseptic wipes and hand sanitizers.

Antiseptics are applied in various medical settings, including hospitals, clinics, and home care. Proper use involves cleaning the affected area before application to ensure maximum effectiveness. While antiseptics significantly reduce infection risks, they are not sterile and should not replace proper wound care techniques like dressing changes and antibiotic treatment when necessary.

Resistance to antiseptic agents has been observed in some microorganisms, particularly in healthcare settings, prompting ongoing research into new formulations and alternative approaches to infection control.
