Antiochia refers to several ancient cities, most notably Antioch on the Orontes, a major Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine city in Syria, near modern Antakya, Turkey. Founded in the 4th century BCE by Seleucus I Nicator, one of Alexander the Great's generals, Antioch on the Orontes quickly became a thriving metropolis and the capital of the Seleucid Empire.
