Antihaftbeschichtung

Antihaftbeschichtung, also known as non-stick coating, refers to a surface treatment applied to cookware and other items to prevent food from sticking. This coating is typically made of synthetic polymer materials, most commonly polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), widely known by its brand name Teflon. Other materials such as ceramic, silicone, and enamel can also be used to create non-stick properties.

The primary function of an antihaftbeschichtung is to reduce the need for cooking oils or fats, which can contribute to healthier cooking by lowering calorie intake. It also makes cleaning cookware significantly easier, as food residue is less likely to adhere to the surface. This property is achieved by the low surface energy of the coating materials, which repel both water and oil.

While highly effective, antihaftbeschichtungen have certain care requirements. They are generally not designed for high-heat cooking, as excessive temperatures can degrade the coating and potentially release fumes, though modern formulations have improved heat resistance. Abrasive cleaning tools and harsh detergents should be avoided to prevent scratching and damage to the non-stick layer. The durability of these coatings varies by quality and usage, and eventually, they may need to be replaced. Concerns have also been raised historically about the environmental impact and potential health effects of some older types of non-stick coatings, particularly those containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, current regulations and manufacturing practices have addressed many of these earlier issues.
