Anteliaisuus

Anteliaisuus is a Finnish noun derived from the verb antelaisuttaa, meaning “to punish” or “to seek revenge.” The term literally translates as “vengefulness” or “vindictiveness,” and it characterizes a disposition toward retaliatory actions when one perceives having been wronged. The concept is used both colloquially and in academic discussions of social behavior in Finland.

In psychological literature, anteliaisuus is discussed as part of the broader spectrum of antagonistic traits. It is distinguished from aggression by its focus on retaliation rather than initial aggression. Individuals exhibiting high levels of anteliaisuus often maintain grudges, showing resistance to forgiveness and a propensity to respond with punitive measures. Studies have linked excessive vindictiveness to lower social functioning and increased conflict in personal relationships.

The trait is not considered a clinical disorder in isolation, but it can be a component of personality disorders such as borderline or antisocial personality disorder, where patterns of intense, unstable emotions and retaliation are present.
