The word derives from the German verb “anstacheln,” literally meaning “to force a thread or staple through.” In practice, Anstachelung typically involves the use of a stapler, clamp, or similar tool that drives a metal fastener into a workpiece, creating a strong, lasting bond.

Historically the technique has been employed in a range of trades. Early uses were found in carpentry, where woodworkers secured planks using hand‑driven nails or burr‑nails that could be considered a form of Anstachelung.
