Anoplopoma

Anoplopoma is a genus of fish in the family Anoplopomatidae, commonly known as true cod or sablefish. The genus contains two species, Anoplopoma fimbria and Anoplopoma abyssum. Both species are found in the North Pacific Ocean.

Anoplopoma fimbria, also known as sablefish or black cod, is a commercially important species. It is found from the Bering Sea to northern Mexico. Sablefish are a deep-sea species, typically found at depths between 300 and 1,500 meters. They are dark in color and can grow up to 1 meter in length. The flesh of sablefish is white, flaky, and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, making it a popular food fish.

Anoplopoma abyssum, or abyssal grenadier, is less well-known and less commercially exploited than sablefish. It is found in the deep waters of the North Pacific, often at depths exceeding 2,000 meters. It is similar in appearance to sablefish but is generally smaller.

The Anoplopoma genus is characterized by its elongated body, two dorsal fins, and a forked tail. They are predatory fish, feeding on smaller fish, squid, and crustaceans. The genus is part of the order Scorpaeniformes, which includes many spiny-rayed fishes.
