Anonüümsetamine is the process of converting personal data into a form that cannot be linked, directly or indirectly, to a specific individual. The principal goal is to protect privacy while allowing data to be used for statistical, research, or commercial purposes. Techniques commonly utilised include pseudonymisation, where direct identifiers are replaced with symbols; data masking, where values are altered or removed; and aggregation, where individual records are summarised into group statistics. More sophisticated methods such as differential privacy add controlled noise to datasets, ensuring that the output does not reveal information about any single contributor while preserving overall patterns.

Legal frameworks in many jurisdictions require a balance between data protection and legitimate data uses. Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union, anonymised data is not considered personal data, but true anonymisation requires that re‑identification is practically impossible. Organisations must document their anonymisation process, conduct impact assessments, and, when necessary, obtain explicit consent or demonstrate a legitimate interest in processing the data.

The benefits of anonüümsetamine include compliance with privacy laws, preservation of individual rights, and increased public trust. However, anonymisation can reduce data granularity, potentially limiting the accuracy of analyses, and insufficient techniques may leave residual identifying information exposed.
