Angika

Angika refers to the physical body as the medium for expression, particularly in Indian classical arts. It encompasses gestures, postures, facial expressions, and movements used by performers to convey emotions, stories, and characters. In dance and drama, Angika Abhinaya, or bodily expression, is one of the four types of abhinaya (dramatic representation), alongside Vachika (verbal), Aharya (costume and makeup), and Sattvika (emotions).

The Natya Shastra, an ancient Indian treatise on the performing arts, extensively details Angika Abhinaya. It describes various movements of different body parts, such as the head, eyebrows, eyes, neck, hands, and limbs, and the specific emotions or meanings they can convey. The precise execution of these movements is crucial for effective communication and aesthetic appeal.

In Bharatanatyam, for instance, mudras (hand gestures) are a significant component of Angika, each holding specific meanings. Similarly, Kathakali performers use elaborate facial expressions and body movements to portray characters from epics. The training of an artist involves rigorous practice to achieve mastery over Angika, ensuring that the body becomes a finely tuned instrument for artistic expression.
