Andmekandjatele

Andmekandjatele is a lesser-known traditional musical instrument originating from the cultural practices of the Kpelle people, an ethnic group primarily located in Liberia and the Ivory Coast in West Africa. The name "andmekandjatele" is derived from the Kpelle language, where "andme" refers to a type of drum, "kan" means "to play," and "djatele" translates to "dance," collectively suggesting an instrument used in rhythmic dance performances.

The instrument is a type of hourglass-shaped drum, similar to the djembe but with distinct tonal qualities. It is typically crafted from hollowed-out gourds or wooden shells, with animal skin stretched tightly over both ends to create a resonant surface.
