Andamántenger

Andamántenger is a small nocturnal arboreal reptile endemic to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Described in 2021 by field herpetologist A. Rao and colleagues, it is known from a limited number of localities and is of interest for studies of island endemism and arboreal adaptation.

Adults measure about 12 to 16 cm in total length, with a slender body, olive-brown dorsum patterned with faint cream or light-green markings, and a pale ventral surface. It has well-developed pads on its digits and a long tail. Its behavior is nocturnal and insectivorous, foraging on tree trunks and in leaf litter.

Distribution and habitat: Endemic to coastal and interior lowland forests of the North, Middle, and South Andaman and Little Andaman, at elevations from 0 to about 200 meters. It favors humid forest habitat and mangrove-fringe zones, where it can retreat into crevices and loose bark when threatened.

Taxonomy and etymology: Andamántenger is placed in the monotypic genus Andamántenger; the taxonomic relationships to other lizards remain unresolved in this account. The name combines Andaman with tenger, a local term meaning hunter, reflecting its reputed agility.

Conservation: The species is listed as Endangered due to habitat loss from deforestation, coastal development, and mangrove conversion. Population size is uncertain, but declines are suspected to be ongoing. Conservation actions recommended include protecting forests and mangroves, conducting targeted surveys, and establishing monitoring programs.
