Anastomooseja

Anastomooseja is the plural form of anastomoosi in Finnish, corresponding to the English term anastomoses. An anastomosis is a connection between two hollow or tubular structures that allows fluid to flow between them. Such connections may occur naturally in the body or be created surgically to restore continuity after injury or resection, or to bypass obstruction.

Common contexts include vascular surgery (connecting arteries or veins to restore circulation), gastrointestinal surgery (connecting bowel segments after resection, or biliary-enteric anastomosis), and transplant surgery (connecting donor and recipient vessels). Microvascular anastomosis refers to very small vessels performed with magnification. There are also physiological anastomoses that form as collateral pathways.

Types and techniques include end-to-end, end-to-side, and side-to-side configurations; sutured, stapled, or adhesive methods. The choice depends on tissue quality, lumen diameter, and anatomy. Adequate alignment, minimization of tension, and good blood supply are essential for healing.

Complications include leakage, bleeding, infection, thrombosis, and stenosis; poor tissue, excessive tension, or technical error increase risk. Outcomes improve with meticulous technique, appropriate drainage, and close postoperative monitoring. An anastomosis may be temporary or permanent, and some may require revision if problems arise.
