Ameraucanas

Ameraucanas are a breed of domestic chicken known for their distinctive blue or green eggs. Originating in South America, the breed was developed in the United States from various Araucana populations. They are characterized by their pea comb, muff, and beard, giving them a unique appearance. Ameraucanas are a medium-sized bird, with roosters typically weighing around 5 pounds and hens about 4 pounds.

The most notable trait of Ameraucanas is their egg color. The blue-green hue comes from a specific pigment called oocyanin, which is deposited late in the egg formation process. This genetic trait is inherited, and not all Ameraucanas will lay eggs of the same color, with variations in shade being common.
