Amenoma

Amenoma is a rare and usually benign tumor that arises from the ovary. Also known as ovarian fibroma, it is a type of sex cord-stromal tumor. The term "amenoma" is derived from the Greek words "amnos," meaning ram or sheep, and "oma," meaning tumor.

Amenoma is characterized by the presence of a well-circumscribed and often fibrotic tumor mass within the ovary. The tumor is typically composed of dense, fibrous tissue that resembles scar tissue. Amenoma is usually unilateral, meaning it affects only one ovary.

Clinical manifestations of amenoma may be subtle and depend on the tumor's size. The most common symptoms are vague and include abdominal swelling, pelvic pressure, and pain. Amenoma may also be asymptomatic, especially when small.

Diagnosis of amenoma often occurs incidentally during imaging studies, such as ultrasound or CT scans, performed for unrelated reasons. The condition typically affects women of reproductive age and is often found during routine gynecologic examinations.

Treatment for amenoma usually involves surgical removal of the affected ovary. The extent of surgery may vary depending on the size of the tumor and the desire for future fertility. In cases where the tumor is large or interferes with adjacent structures, more extensive surgery may be necessary.

Malignant transformation of amenoma is extremely rare, occurring in less than 1% of cases. However, due to its potential effects on reproductive and overall health, prompt medical attention is essential if symptoms of amenoma are suspected.
