Ambushing is a tactical concept in which a party attacks from a concealed position, relying on surprise to disrupt, destroy, or seize targets. The aim is to strike an opposing force or movement as it passes through a prepared area, before the target can effectively respond. Ambushes are used across military, paramilitary, and insurgent contexts and can involve small teams or larger units. The word ambush conveys the idea of hidden waiting, with many languages using comparable terms to describe lying in wait. In military doctrine, ambushes are categorized by location and objective, such as point ambushes that block a specific route and area ambushes that cover a broader zone. They are typically associated with exploiting terrain, timing, and surprise to maximize impact.
