Ambohitsorohitra

Ambohitsorohitra is a historical site located in Antananarivo, Madagascar. It is most famously associated with the Ambohitsorohitra Palace, a significant presidential residence and a landmark of the city. The site itself is a rocky hill, a prominent feature in the Malagasy landscape and a place with deep historical roots.

Historically, Ambohitsorohitra was a fortified settlement and a royal seat for the Merina kingdom long before the establishment of Antananarivo as the capital. Its strategic elevated position offered defensive advantages. The current palace structure dates back to the late 19th century, built during the reign of Queen Ranavalona III. It was designed by French architect Jean Labrosse and intended as a private residence for the queen, though it later served various administrative and residential purposes.

The palace has undergone numerous renovations and expansions over the years. In the post-colonial era, it became a presidential palace, housing several Malagasy presidents. Its architecture reflects a blend of European styles, characteristic of the colonial period in Madagascar, with local influences. The grounds surrounding the palace are also notable, contributing to its overall historical and aesthetic significance. Ambohitsorohitra remains an important symbol of Madagascar's royal past and its subsequent political history.
