In display applications, ambient light rejection relies on directional or selective reflectance. Shaped or structured screen surfaces, such as microlouver or lenticular designs, reflect projector-generated light back toward the viewer while absorbing or diffusing ambient light coming from other angles. Optical coatings and polarization strategies may be used to distinguish the signal light from ambient illumination, sometimes by exploiting wavelength or polarization differences. The result is higher perceived contrast and brightness for a given projector input under bright room conditions, though at the cost of potentially narrower viewing angles or color shifts.

Typical applications include front-projection screens in home theaters, classrooms, and commercial spaces where lighting cannot be fully controlled, as well as digital signage and certain professional environments. Performance depends on factors such as projector type (DLP, LCD, or LCoS), screen gain, viewing angle, ambient light level, and room geometry.
